We were asked by non-profit La Peña Cultural Center to upgrade their original 1980s-era restaurant kitchen up to today’s health and safety standards. The restaurant operator, Los Cilantros, was a La Cocina graduate, so of course we were very happy to be a part of this project to provide Chef Dilsa Lugo and her team a fresh and safe space to cook from. We worked extremely closely with our friends at Studio KDA for months to ensure that the re-design aligned with La Peña's strict budget, and we're so proud of the final product! We reinforced an aging wall with new structural supports, and then rebuilt the kitchen with new plumbing, a new electrical panel, a new hood, custom stainless steel, and new finishes throughout the kitchen and dining room.
La Peña, Spanish for “gathering place,” has been a fixture in the Berkeley and international community for nearly five decades. The institution promotes peace, social justice and cultural understanding through the arts, education and social action. We are honored to have played a small role in the continuation of such an important mission.
